Time is a luxury. This is a fact I have become increasingly aware of recently and we just came back from a week long vacation in Malta which was a strong reminder of this. It was an amazing vacation, we visited incredible places, got to relax on spectacular beaches, gazed out at sunsets on golden water and red earth, and ate food that I will miss all year from now on, but one week was not enough for Malta. One week meant we were often rushing from one touristy spot to the next trying to squeeze in all there was to see in 5 days, it meant we used those kind of tacky hop on hop off busses to get around just cause it was quicker (even though, truth be told, they did offer great, concise and interesting explanations on the various sites) and it meant that it sometimes felt like we weren't taking the time to take it all in.
Il tempo è un lusso e ultimamente me ne sto rendendo sempre più conto.
Siamo appena tornati da una vacanza di una settimana a Malta che mi ha reso
ancora più consapevole di questo fatto. La vacanza è stata meravigliosa,
abbiamo visitato posti incredibili, ci siamo rilassati su spiagge spettacolari,
siamo rimasti incantati di fronte a tramonti sull'acqua dorata e sulla terra
rossa e abbiamo mangiato cibo che mi mancherà per un anno, ma una settimana non
basta per Malta. Una settimana significa che spesso correvamo da un luogo
turistico all'altro cercando di incastrare tutto nel poco tempo a disposizione,
significa che abbiamo usato quei bus turistici hop on hop off un po' pacchiani
solo perché era il modo più rapido di muoversi (anche se, a essere onesti, offrivano delle ottime spiegazioni, interessanti e concise, sulle cose da vedere) e significa che spesso per via delle fretta non potevamo goderci i luoghi come avremmo voluto.
Malta is amazing, such a small island with so many incredible things to see, opulent baroque churches, megalithic temples from the neolithic era, breathtaking fortified cities, ruins of ancient roman villas with incredibly well preserved mosaics, dreamy beaches, quiet fishermen villages with colorful boats, amazing caves, cliffs and spectacular rock formations, just to mention a few. There is a unique atmosphere where the sicilian, north african and british cultures are merged together in an unusual and very mediteranean mix.
While we managed to visit a great amount of things and while I came back home refreshed and relaxed the way you want to be after a vacation, I still wish we would have had more time.
Malta è spettacolare, in un'isola così piccola sono concentrate tantissime cose da vedere, opulenti chiese barocche, templi megalitici dell'era neolitica, spettacolari città fortificate, rovine di antiche ville romane con mosaici conservati benissimo, spiagge incantevoli, tranquilli villaggi di pescatori con barche colorate, grotte stupende, scogliere e formazioni rocciose bellissime...e la lista potrebbe continuare. C'è un'atmosfera unica dove la cultura siciliana, quella nord africana e quella inglese si mescolano in uno strano mix molto mediterraneo. Anche se siamo riusciti a vedere tantissime cose e anche se son tornata a casa fresca e riposata proprio come si vorrebbe dopo una vacanza, mi sarebbe piaciuto avere più tempo a disposizione.
I wish we had had more time to walk around aimlessly and get off the beaten path, and to get lost in the narrower and less crowded streets of Valletta. I especially regret not having had the time to find out more about the local crafts, the laces, the knitting etc. (apparently there is quite a culture of handknitting beautiful wool sweaters during the winter, even though it was hard to believe under the scorching mid august sun).
It means I will have to go back. We visited the ruins of a roman villa where there was a room specifically dedicated to the
otium of the home owner. Simply, next time I go to Malta I will try to find the time to enjoy some more of that myself.
Mi sarebbe piaciuto avere più tempo per vagare senza meta, per uscire dalle zone più turistiche, per perdermi nelle viuzze più strette e meno affollate di Valletta. Soprattutto mi spiace non aver potuto scoprire di più sull'artigianato locale, sui pizzi, sulla maglieria ecc. (a quanto pare c'è una forte tradizione di maglioni lavorati a mano in lana per l'inverno, anche se era difficile immaginarselo nel torrido clima di metà agosto).
Vuol dire che dovrò tornare. Abbiamo visitato le rovine di una villa romana dove vi era una stanza dedicata esclusivamente ll'otium del padre famiglia. Semplicemente, la prossima volta che vado a Malta, dovrò trovare il modo di dedicarmi po' di più anche io a questa sana pratica.
