Merry Christmas to all!

Unfortunately there is only one of my cats in the picture...but you get the idea (of how little they care about Christmas probably)! Have fun, eat a lot, laugh a lot and enjoy the time with your families and friends!

Sneak Peek

I've been working on various projects lately...as always I tend to cast on for too many things at the same time, but I'm slowly but surely moving forward...
Here's a sneak peek of a few of the projects I'm working on or I have recently finished and still have to photograph...

The first yarn is an amazing mohair (45% mohair and 55% acrylic) which has the perfect combination of fluffyness and structure. The second one is a lovely peruvian wool I bought in Albuquerque two summers ago which is just incredible to work with, and the last one is superwash merino wool from Filatura di Crosa...it is a little hard to work with because it splits while knitting it but it yealds lovely results, it has great stitch definition and is just so incredibly soft!

Working with great yarns has made me more and more difficult and picky when it comes to buying store bought clothes, especially knitwear. If only I had the time I would knit my entire knitwear wardrobe...the difference in quality is just so apparent! If I think of the amount of crappy sweaters I have bought over the years that started pilling after one season! They were cheap of course, but on the long run it is just a smarter use of your money to spend more on something of quality that will last several years. This is a mentality I'm trying to force myself to follow in everything...buy less, buy better. It doesn't mean choosing the expensive choice all the time...au contraire! Sometimes the price depends on the brand and how fashionable it is at the moment rather than on the quality of the materials (pleather designer bags...I am looking at you). It means taking the time to look at the materials carefully and choose wisely what I'm going to buy. I have a slight (ahem) tendency towards buying too much and looking for the cheap choice but I am trying to switch towards a smarter way of spending.

Comprare meno, comprare meglio.

I've noticed that with the recession this is a topic people are talking about more and Etsy is a great example of where people are trying to use their money better, choosing handmade, choosing quality and good craftmanship over cheap mass produced goods that are intended to have a short life span. I admit it isn't easy, it takes time to think your choices through (and for an impatient person like me, that ain't easy!), and it also takes a little courage to spend big bucks on something you know you could find for a fifth of the price in any big chain store. But I think it is worth it. Quality, good craftmanship and also the uniqueness of handmade items is something I am giving more and more value to as time goes by, probably a sign of me getting older and wiser?

I'm still here...

My last  post was in September...whoops. These past months have been a little crazy to say the least. A lot of changes took place, one of which is that I started working at a full time job, which obviously cut down drastically on my knitting and blogging time. I do have some stuff that is finished or almost finished that I have to take pictures of and that I will show you soon...
In the meanwhile, to make up for the silence of these last weeks...here are a few pictures of the glorious fall we've been having and from a few trips and travels I took lately, a little eye candy to keep you occupied till I have new post material to share!

A summer and a winter F.O.!

As promised I have some F.O.s to show you, and since we're in an in between moment of the year one is a summer one and one is a winter one...
The summer item is this crocheted summer hat, in pure cotton, that I made following the idea behind this hat and changing it a bit and adding a pretty white ribbon to it...I love the cloche look with the ribbon!

The winter item is this chunky scarf that I knit using a beautiful cobalt blue 100% wool yarn and a pretty eyelet pattern that I made up as I went. This scarf feels very warm and I think the pattern looks great with the chunky yarn, chunky yarn and garter stitch just make a perfect match I think, and the eyelets make it a little more interesting...

Getting ready for winter...

Winter is coming... (I don't really watch the series, just know about it, should I watch it?)
As always I turn to the Kim Hargreaves site for a little inspiration and her new book "Smoulder" is out. I have to say I quite like it (I have really loved the last three or four of her books, after a brief phase in which I found some of her books a little bland)... This one has a few pieces that I don't find particularly flattering on the models (I don't know if it depends on the items or just on the styling) but it also has some items that I love, the kind I would like to own: classic, elegant wardrobe staples, take a look:

Mila
Rosamund
Wren
Holt

Kitten
I particularly love the Kitten cardigan and the Holt coat... I have a similar coat (but with cables) that a family friend knit in the seventies and I use it a lot, I've worn it for years and never get tired of it, it is so impeccably made, I'll maybe post a picture of it some time...

All images via.

I'm back!

Sarajevo
It's been ages since my last post, sorry about that! I just came home last week from an amazing vacation in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia...beautiful places, let me tell you, Sarajevo is an extremely fascinating city, I would really recommend it!

Dubrovnik

I'm now working on finishing off summer projects and starting some new winter projects...as always this time of year is really exciting for me, I always have so many ideas for fall/winter knitting...I just find it so much easier than summer knitting!
So expect F.O.s soon!

Neutral

Looking at most of my favorite items on etsy lately I think I'm having a neutral colors phase...

F.O.: White cotton summer cowl!

Hello there! I finally edited and posted the pictures of this summer cowl I made a while ago, it's crocheted in a lovely pure white cotton with a pretty airy lace pattern...details on my etsy page!

F.O.: White summer drawstring sweater

Here is the F.O. I mentioned in my last post...finished, blocked and photographed! It's a lightweight summer sweater that closes in the front with a drawstring. It's very simple and clean, and it is also the result of a happy incident... I started it at my boyfriend's house and realized I had brought with me two needles in two diffferent sizes (a 5 and a 4), but I was really impatient to start it so I tried working with the two needles together, and loved what happened...the rib pattern I was using turned out lovely with the slightly wavy effect that resulted from having two different sized needles, and once I switched to the stockinette stitch the result was just as beautiful! If you look closely at the close up picture you will see what I mean...

All in all I love this sweater, I think it's very versatile (I think it might even work as a cover up on the beach with shorts), the yarn is a ramie-acrylic blend that is soft yet slightly shiny and very fresh for summer...
details on my etsy page!

Summer knitting inspiration

I know I say this all the time but I wish I could knit more....I always thought I would have more time after I graduated, but now that I did, I'm still studying for something non-university related, plus looking for a job and it seems like I never have time. Or maybe I'm just not too good at time management...Also my wrist has been hurting more than usual recently which is little frustrating...I should stretch it more before knitting and take more breaks ...
I have however finished an item I will show you soon and I have been looking around for inspiration for summer knits and fallen in love with so many beautiful patterns, take a look:
