Inspiration: Vintage Riviera Posters

In keeping with the theme of the last post (and adding a sprinkle of French Riviera to the mix)...

Back to rainy Torino...

I was away this weekend at the seaside and it was so hard coming back home...even if we did have some crazy thunderstorms down there too, they just felt more magical at the seaside...

F.O.: Yellow lacy tank top

I had this idea in my head for a while that I wanted to make a top where the upper part was made of crochet lace and the bottom part was knit in simple stockinette stitch. I like the result and I think I am going to play around with this style a little more, for instance I was thinking of making a shift minidress using this same construction.
For this top I used a yarn that is made up of 100% lempur, in a beautiful warm yellow color. The lacy upper part has a straight collar line, and the top has a slight A line which makes it very flattering and comfortable to wear.
As always details on my etsy shop!

Greyhound

I heard in the news today that the Greyhound bus line is turning 100 years old. As a lover of all things american road trip I have always been fascinated by these busses and will never forget when I got to ride one myself. It was summer of 2009 and it was a trip from Vancouver to Seattle (and back) with one of my best friends. The trip involved, among other things, a very early rise, a young junkie who was looking for some company, a border agent telling us about how Italy had recently lost a few square meters of land to Switzerland (apparently the underwater border between the two countries at the Lago Maggiore had been recently moved, we had no clue), and lots and lots of beautiful landscapes.
It was definitely a memorable trip and these are the only two photos I took...

And look at how beautiful the old busses were!

Objects with a story...

When furnishing and decorating my house at the end of last year at first all I wanted was to stay within a budget and get it done fast. As I've mentioned before, patience is not really my strong suit, I couldn't wait for it too feel like a home, organized, furnished and lived in. So basically there were many many trips to Ikea and assembling furniture at unusual hours of the day. But I soon noticed that what happens when you do this is that, while I love Ikea, if you rely on it too much your house tends to look like everyone else's (on the planet) and lack a bit of personality. I am fascinated by houses that are decorated with objects that tell a story, that have been found in travels around the world, that have been carefully manufactured by an artisan and discovered in a small shop somewhere far away from home. I also obviously generally prefer handcrafted items over mass produced goods, or vintage/antique pieces with their own history.
So I slowed down and decided to buy things over time that I found while travelling, or on Etsy or at antique markets.
My house is now complete and I'd say one third of it is Ikea, one third Etsy and one third Gran Balon (an amazing flee/antique/vintage market held in Torino every month). Add to that a few items that I bought in my latest travels and some things I made myself and my home now feels personal and full of memories.
Here is a little corner I particularly love:

First off, the liquor cabinet. I'm not much of a liquor drinker (there's actually more wine in there than rhum or cognac, but don't tell anyone), but it is a given fact that any cool house has to have a liquor cabinet. I mean, Mad Men. You know. I found this one at the aforementioned Balon and it was actually a funny moment... another person was interested in it but was happy to let me buy it because he said he appreciated young people with good taste (ha!) and even took out pen and paper to do a series of magic tricks to convince me I had to buy it. I didn't really see the logic behind this but I eventually did buy it and when I did the seller told me that that nice man was actually a famous person in the soccer world. Ha! Whenever I look at that cabinet I think of that peculiar episode. This is what I mean about objects with a story. I could have bought a standard cabinet at any furniture store for slightly less, but it wouldn't have been so interesting (and it also wouldn't have that distinct smell of years of alcohol when you open it!).

Prendiamolo proprio come assioma imprescindibile. Mad Men lo abbiamo visto tutti, o no?

The painting I bought from this amazing dutch artist on Etsy and had framed by a local artisan. I love that painting, I love Holland and its landscapes and am particularly fascinated by the North Sea.
Last but not least the vase is vintage and comes from this other amazing Etsy store (Dutch as well).
I love the way it all looks together!

F.O.: The white summer cardigan

This is a white cardigan I finished a few weeks ago, knit up in a ramie acrylic blend with a striped textured stitch, 3/4 length sleeves and with two big plastic buttons. This is one of those cases in which I had a clear picture in my mind of what I wanted to make and the final result turned out how I had imagined. I particularly like the look of the two plastic buttons in the same color of the sweater...I kind of wanted to keep this one for myself! As I was saying the other day, this is the perfect example of something you can wear in a number of different occasions, to the office, out and about in the afternoon, but also, for instance, over a pretty dress at a party on a yacht in Saint Tropez (why not? You never know...)
As always details on my etsy page!

Sneak peek

Some of the things I strive for when making a new item are comfort, versatility and functionality. I want the clothes I design to have the characteristics I look for when buying things for myself and I appreciate it when the clothes I own are easy and fuss-free to wear. I like to throw on a dress in the morning that will make me feel good and that allows me to move around freely without feeling constrained and that won't wrinkle immediately as soon as I sit down or get caught in the wheels of my bike or reveal my bra strap when I move around. Do you know what I mean? The dress will also earn bonus points if it is versatile meaning I can wear it in warm weather and in cold weather just by adding extra layers or that I can wear it to work, out for lunch with friends, on a roadtrip or to a wedding depending on the accessories I wear it with.
I am thinking of all of this while making a new cotton dress I am working on right now...here is a small sneak peek!
I have a clear idea in mind of how I want it to look and hopefully I'll be able to achieve that idea, and hopefully it will turn out to have all the characteristics I just mentioned!

It's the 4th of July...

...it's raining, and I'm wearing a sweater and a scarf. But I'm not minding it too much for now, this is, after all, perfect knitting weather...
