F.O.: Chocolate brown headband

This is a quick little project I finished a while ago and only just now added to my Etsy store. I have been making quite a few of these lately and own some myself, they are perfect for colder days when you need your ears to be kept warm but don't feel like wearing a hat. It's handknit in superwash merino wool in a pretty textured stitch and in a lovely dark brown chocolate color.
As always, details on my Etsy page!

I really love these cloche hats! I am making one for myself in cotton for next summer. I find them very flattering and they have the added bonus of being easy to pack. This one is crocheted in a beautiful emerald green merino superwash yarn. The ribbon adds some interest and gives it even more of a retro feel.
As always details on my etsy page!

Pink canals

I just recently came back from a short trip to Amsterdam to visit my brother. That city is absolutely stunning and every time I go there I daydream of moving there to stay...
One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the incredible yarn store Stephan and Penelope. I resisted the urge to come back with bags and bags of yarn and it was a huge accomplishment as the walls were covered in skeins of beautiful yarns in the kind of colors dreams are made of! I saw some incredible combinations of luxurious fibers wound up in skeins of pure heaven, I am so proud of myself for not buying the whole store! What I did buy was a series of interchangeable Knit pro round needles in different sizes, which I cannot wait to put to work...
The last day before going back to the airport we walked around the city center for one last time around sunset, the sky was turning pink and I noticed that the canals were turning the same shade. It was so beautiful I felt like I was in dutch painting from the 17th century. Behind all the tourists and the craziness, that city is pure magic.

Can we please take a moment...

...to admire the sheer perfection of Tippi Hedren's suits in the movie The Birds?
Unlike in the movie Marnie, where she wore an array of beautiful clothes, in this 1963 classic she only really appears in two outfits, but man were they flawless! (Even though the green suit gets beat up pretty badly towards the end of the movie...). I love the length of the sleeves and the stand collar of the gray suit, and the green suit is perfect in its clean lines. Read more about them here.

Hope you had a fun Halloween! I spent mine curled up on the couch watching a war movie with wine, boyfriend and cats. I'm an old lady, I know, (only three years ago I was in NYC with some friends, walking around in a half-assed Salvador Dalì costume and admiring the creativity of everyone's costumes in that incredible city!).

Bright and colorful in Finland

Marimekko is a Finnish fashion and home decor company that is actually very famous but I only found out about recently. I love prints and while I rarely wear prints this bold, I find the aesthetic of the company beautiful and the story behind it very interesting.

The company was founded in 1951 by Viljo and Armi Ratia initially as a textile company and then introducing a line of simple dresses. In the bleak atmosphere of post war Europe this company brought color and bold prints to lighten up the mood a bit and the company then gradually rose to success...the first fashion show at the Kalastajatorppa hotel in Helsinki was a huge success, in 1957 Giorgio Armani, who was working as a window dresser at the time, invited Ratia to display her line at the Rinascente in Milan, designers Vuokko Nurmesniemi and Maija Isola created prints that would become iconic and Jacqueline Kennedy even bought seven dresses from the company helping it rise to fame.
The company now has stores all over the world.
Take a look at this beautiful video to understand the company's philosophy better:

F.O.: Chunky purple scarf with diamond shaped lacy pattern

The weather is getting colder and I am actually starting to look forward to things like warm cups of tea while it's snowing outside, getting bundled up in warm wool sweaters, drinking vin brulè, going to the mountains to ski and hiding my nose in big chunky scarves.
In the spirit of which...here is my last addition to the shop...
It's a chunky shawl or infinity scarf, knit up in a beautiful 100% wool puple yarn with a diamond shaped lacy pattern all over it. What I love about these scarves is that you can wear them in different ways depending on how cold you are or what look you want to create...
As always...details on my etsy page!

New wool makes me happy...

Especially when it's ecological wool from this amazing company...

...and when buying it is an excuse to end up in this beautiful place...

This is absolutely fascinating...

Matthew Simmonds is a stone carver that recreates historical architecture out of blocks of marble. He carves the interiors of churches and other classical architectural spaces within marble blocks, and by leaving part of the rock untouched, he creates a contrast between natural roughness and irregularity and man-made smoothness and proportion.
The sculptures are beautiful, and somehow make me think of the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum in Malta, where, around 3000BC, a temple was recreated underground by carving through stone. In that amazing site, the builders imitated the temples that were built outside using huge slabs of rock by carving the shapes and ornamentations in the earth underground.
As is stated on his website: "Simmonds makes a play of architecture and ornamentation on a small scale, but the spaces created give the same feeling as in the buildings themselves; a place to rest, a place to travel with the eye and maybe find a moment of tranquillity. The marble is opened up, and inside is a space within a building that only exists in the viewer's mind. What you sense is the significance of space".

London

I just came back from a very quick trip to London to visit a friend. Since it was such a brief stay we had a very non-touristy vacation, we didn't go to any of the city's main attractions (most of which I had already seen anyways) but instead got a chance to roam around some beautiful and more quiet areas I had never been to. For instance we went to the Spitalfields market, a lovely market where you can find some pretty incredible booths with local designers selling their work (be it clothes, prints, jewellery, ceramics etc.) and where the atmosphere is more relaxed, and less hectic and trendy than in Camden town. I bought a gorgeous light blue  handmade coat and a beautiful blue vase by ceramic designer Maria Bendixen. These goodies will remind me of this trip and of the beautiful market every time I use them.

I also ended up going to the screening of the movie Wish I was here by Zach Braff (I wasn't initially supposed to go but a friend was ill and gave me her ticket). I loved the movie, it is the perfect balance of sad, sweet and funny, kind of the way real life is a combination of the three, and the characters are relatable and very well portrayed.  There is also a lot of L.A. in the movie, a beautiful yet sometimes lonely L.A., and it made me miss the city and really want to go back! Zach Braff is really really funny in real life as well; the Q&A session at the end was both very interesting and absolutely hilarious.
Go see the movie, it is definitely worth it!

And here we go with the first fall/winter items of the season...
This is a cloche hat I made in a lovely sueprwash merino yarn. I love this dark red color and the way the leaf pattern came out, I kind of made it up while knitting, it was a bit of an intuitive process and I like the result.
Details on my etsy page!
