Finally...

It was just for one day...but I definitely enjoyed it!

The time has come for me to be brutally honest

I have come to the decision that I will raise my prices in the next few days. It took me a long time to come to this decision, you may or may not have noticed that I have been playing around with my prices lately, but in the next few days I will adjust them to the final point and won't change them anymore.
In order for me to explain this decision, this is the story about me and my pricing.
When I first decided to sell what I made, it was just an experiment, I wanted to see if I could get something out of what I loved doing. So the first prices I gave to my garments were very low. Way too low. I priced according to how much I would have spent for a similar item of clothing. But the thing is, I wasn't selling the type of clothing I buy. Let's be honest here, I buy cheap clothing, like everyone else does, clothing that is mass produced out of materials that aren't exactly top quality, and what I buy is actually not made to last very long (and here I could go on and on about modern day consumerism, and how wrong it is that we are now made to buy stuff that will be outdated or worn out really soon, only to make us buy more and more and more, but don't worry, I won't. It would actually be hypocritical of me, since I am the first to fall victim of trends and to get tired of what I have etc.). What I make is different though, it takes hours and hours of work, and the few things I have that I have made for myself have lasted for years (even over 10 years in some cases). Selling it at those prices was not giving it justice. So it took me a while but I eventually doubled my prices. It was scary at first but I just went for it.
Still, it felt like the amount of work and the prices of the final products were not really balanced yet. Thing is, I didn't really know exactly how many hours of work it took me to make the single items. So, as I mentioned in a post a while ago, I decided to try and actually time my work, to have a clear idea of what I was really charging myself per hour. The results were more than a little depressing: I was charging myself between 1€ and 1,50€ per hour. Not good.
That is how I came to the conclusion that I must face the reality of things and raise my prices to a point where I am charging myself a fair amount per hour. Low, but fair.
I browsed a lot through etsy. Many sellers are clearly underpricing, and I really understand it. Handmade takes a long time to make and the prices you get by paying yourself a fair price are really scary. Many sellers that sell handknit clothing, though, seem to pay themselves well. Handknit is expensive, but if you really think about it, it has to be. You are actually making the fabric of the garments yourself, one stitch at a time.
While I'm being honest I have to say, my business online is not going well at all. So, since I know I still have a lot of work to do, a lot of improvements to make under so many different aspects, I decided I will start by paying myself a fair price, in order to be motivated to do all the work it takes to build a better online business.
My new prices might seem presumptious, but they really aren't (trust me, the amount per hour is still really low, but at least it's not slavery low).
So that's it, the cold, hard truth.
In the next few days I will be calculating the new prices of all of my items on etsy and changing them accordingly, I really hope you understand.

F.O. Striped blue, pink and offwhite top

Aaand, i have an F.O.! I'll admit this top didn't really come out the way I had planned and at first I was a little disappointed. In my head it was supposed to be longer and, well, just different I guess. But it grew on me and I actually find it really pretty now. I had to stitch down the collar because it rolled a little awkwardly and now it looks great, nice and clean and the yarn I used is a lovely 100% cotton I've used about a hundred times before and which I love, it's great, shiny and fresh! Also, I love the degrading color effect (to get it I simply used two threads in different colors together).
As always, details on my etsy page!
