I've been working on various projects lately...as always I tend to cast on for too many things at the same time, but I'm slowly but surely moving forward...
Here's a sneak peek of a few of the projects I'm working on or I have recently finished and still have to photograph...
Ultimamente sto lavorando a una serie di progetti...come al solito tendo a iniziare troppe cose allo stesso tempo, ma pian pianino sto facendo progressi...
Vi lascio dare una rapida occhiatina a tre cose su cui sto lavorando o che ho finito e devo ancora fotografare...
The first yarn is an amazing mohair (45% mohair and 55% acrylic) which
has the perfect combination of fluffyness and structure. The second one
is a lovely peruvian wool I bought in Albuquerque two summers ago which
is just incredible to work with, and the last one is superwash merino
wool from Filatura di Crosa...it is a little hard to work with because
it splits while knitting it but it yealds lovely results, it has great
stitch definition and is just so incredibly soft!
Per la prima sto usando un filato mohair fantastico (45% mohair e 55%
acrilico) che ha il perfetto equilibrio fra la morbidezza del mohair e
la solidità dell'acrilico, per la seconda sto usando una lana peruviana bellissima che ho comprato ad Albuquerque qualche estate fa e che è una
meraviglia da lavorare e per la terza uno stupendo merino superwash
della Filatura di Crosa, un po' difficile da lavorare perchè tende a
separarsi mentre la lavori ma che dà ottimi risultati con i punti molto
ben definiti e con un tessuto morbidissimo.
Working with great yarns has made me more and more difficult and
picky when it comes to buying store bought clothes, especially knitwear.
If only I had the time I would knit my entire knitwear wardrobe...the difference
in quality is just so apparent! If I think of the amount of crappy
sweaters I have bought over the years that started pilling after one
season! They were cheap of course, but on the long run it is just a
smarter use of your money to spend more on something of quality that
will last several years. This is a mentality I'm trying to force myself
to follow in everything...buy less, buy better. It doesn't mean choosing
the expensive choice all the time...au contraire! Sometimes the price
depends on the brand and how fashionable it is at the moment rather than
on the quality of the materials (pleather designer bags...I am looking
at you). It means taking the time to look at the materials carefully and
choose wisely what I'm going to buy. I have a slight (ahem) tendency
towards buying too much and looking for the cheap choice but I am trying
to switch towards a smarter way of spending.
Lavorare con filati
bellissimi mi sta facendo diventare sempre più difficile quando si
tratta di comprare capi nei negozi, soprattutto per quanto riguarda la
maglieria. Ne avessi il tempo realizzerei a mano il mio intero guardaroba di maglieria, la differenza nella qualità è talmente evidente! Se penso
alla quantità di maglie economiche che ho comprato negli anni che dopo
una stagione erano completamente rovinate! Costavano poco, è vero, ma
ultimamente sto cercando di cambiare il mio modo di acquistare,
sforzandomi di prediligere la qualità, perchè è semplicemente un modo
più furbo di usare i propri soldi. Questo non significa
necessariamente comprare sempre l'opzione più cara, anzi! Spesso il
prezzo è dato più dal brand e da quanto va di moda piuttosto che dalla
qualità delle materie prime. Si tratta di fare più attenzione ai
materiali e di cercare di scegliere meglio quello che si acquista. Io ho
la leggera (ahem) tendenza a comprare un tantino compulsivamente e
cercare sempre l'opzione più economica, ma sto cercando di cambiare
atteggiamento. Comprare meno, comprare meglio.
I've noticed that with the
recession this is a topic people are talking about more and Etsy is a
great example of where people are trying to use their money better,
choosing handmade, choosing quality and good craftmanship over cheap
mass produced goods that are intended to have a short life span. I
admit it isn't easy, it takes time to think your choices through (and
for an impatient person like me, that ain't easy!), and it also takes a
little courage to spend big bucks on something you know you could find
for a fifth of the price in any big chain store. But I think it is worth
it. Quality, good craftmanship and also the uniqueness of handmade
items is something I am giving more and more value to as time goes by,
probably a sign of me getting older and wiser?
Ho notato che con la
crisi questo è diventato un argomento di cui si parla di più, c'è più
attenzione e più consapevolezza dello spreco che questo tipo di
consumismo comporta. Etsy ne è il perfetto esempio: spesso chi compra
su questo o altri siti simili tende a cercare di investire meglio i propri soldi, prediligendo
il fatto a mano e l'artigianato di qualità rispetto ai beni prodotti in
massa e a basso prezzo.
Lo ammetto, non è sempre facile, bisogna avere il
tempo e la voglia di scegliere con più calma, e non è facilissimo
spingersi a spendere tanti soldi in oggetti che si è consci di poter
trovare ad un quinto del prezzo in un qualsiasi negozio di catena. Ma a mio
parere ne vale la pena. La qualità dei materiali, la qualità della
lavorazione artigianale, anche l'unicità degli oggetti fatti a
mano...queste sono tutte cose a cui sto dando sempre più valore col
tempo, forse un segno che sto diventando più vecchia e saggia?
