Mile high reading...

A few months ago I was on a plane flying back from a quick trip in Amsterdam to see my brother and I was reading one of those airline magazines you find in the seat pouch. Don't you love those? They are usually filled with really interesting articles on a variety of subjects and most of the time they spark your wanderlust making you want to go visit all kinds of countries and places (makes sense for an airline to do that).
I was particularly intrigued by an article on Brunello Cucinelli, a designer I had heard of before but didn't really know much about. His is an extremely high end company that is famous particularly for its luxurious and sophisticated cashmere sweaters, but since it started its activity in the seventies as a company specialized in colorful cashmere sweaters, it has expanded its line to include different clothing items and accessories.

The company itself is now located in what seems to be an absolutely breathtaking medieval town in Umbria, Solomeo (see what I mean about the wanderlust thing? I want to go there now!). Brunello Cucinelli bought the XIV century castle of Solomeo in 1985 and transfered the company to this town. An important part of the philosophy of this company is a consequence of the owner's love for art and history: he invested a part of the profits of the company to restore and requalify the village and its significant historical buildings. This attention to the cultural heritage of his region is clear even just by visiting the company's website, a pleasure for the eyes filled with wonderful images of medieval frescoes and paintings.
The owner can be described as a humanist, putting his efforts into enhancing the cultural life of his hometown, (for instance through his Foundation and Amphitheatre) and guaranteeing that his workers are part of this humanist ideal of his, with wages that are higher than average and a strong attention towards their education in the Solomeo School of Craftmanship.
