On handknit bags or purses

Handknit purses are not easy. Technically they can be very easy to make but it's not easy to find some one would actually use...most patterns you find around the web look like they would be fun to make but the final product looks like something you would end up using very little or only using out of respect for your hard work. I have made a few purses myself but have never sold any and this only proves my point.

Here are a few examples of purses I found on the web that I thought were pretty:

Felting is great for purses because it gives them structure and strength, but it is a techinque I have never tried (I want to try it out sometime though). Here are some pretty examples I found:

Many handknit bags look very pretty but look like they aren't structured enough and wouldn't be strong enough to hold the things one usually carries around in a purse...

...this is usually because they appear not to be lined...lining the inside with fabric generally is enough to make them much more resistant and to help them hold their shape even when full with all the essentials one carries around (you know, wallet, keys, car keys, cellphone, chapstick). This is a beautiful purse I found on the web that features lining also on the handles which is a great idea since they tend to get longer and deformed in time...

I don't know if this purse is lined or not but it is very pretty, this I would use:

Another great idea I want to try sooner or later is that of using cardboard or plastic to create a structure inside the bag to make it more resistant and give it a well defined shape (plastic seems like a better idea because cardboard + rain = big mess):

Of course using plastic or leather handles is also a smart move...I have a few in my drawers waiting to be used...

That's it for today...my first winter project is coming along quite fast, I'll show you a sneak peek soon!
